The Circus Is Dead captures the story of Mary the Elephant, an elephant who killed a man during a circus performance after he prodded her infected tooth. The townspeople demanded her killing, and she was publicly hanged by crane in Erwin, TN on September 13, 1916. The Circus Is Dead lays bare the darkness that can lie beneath human amusement.
