Wire Sculpture Care

Wire Sculpture Care
  • Wire sculptures can be suitable for indoor or outdoor display, depending on the components. Most sculptures that incorporate wooden elements will do best inside. Most sculptures that incorporate metal elements or wooden elements designed for outdoor use (e.g., benches) are great for either indoors or outdoors.
  • If wire sculptures are placed outside, you can expect that they will change over time. Aluminum or galvanized steel wire may grow dull. Iron wire already has a patina of rust in most cases, and you may see more rust grow as the years pass. Much of the found metal incorporated into sculptures is already antique and somewhat rusted. The best way to protect the wire and any included metal components is to apply an annual coat of Rustoleum Crystal Clear enamel or a similar product, available at most hardware stores. You may want to coat more frequently if the sculpture is placed in a high-humidity or coastal area. Josh pre-coats all iron wire sculptures with Rustoleum. That being said, many wire sculptures placed outdoors over the last few decades of Josh's career are still "alive and well", even without regular application of clear coat!
